Trichloroethylene (TCE); An Invisible Cause of Parkinson's? is the title of an article in the journal of Parkinson's Disease published on March 14, 2023. It says, "TCE is a simple, six-atom molecule that can decaffeinate coffee, degrease metal parts, and dry clean clothes. The colorless chemical was first linked to parkinsonism in 1969. Since then, four case studies involving eight individuals have linked occupational exposure to TCE to PD. In addition, a small epidemiological study found that occupational or hobby exposure to the solvent was associated with a 500% increased risk of developing PD. TCE | An Invisible Cause of Parkinson's?

PD Avengers President and cofounder Larry Gifford interviews The Michael J. Fox Foundation CEO and cofounder Debi Brooks about the discovery of a new biomarker for Parkinson's disease. Researchers have discovered a new tool called the α-synuclein seeding amplification assay (αSyn-SAA) that can detect the "Parkinson's protein," known as abnormal alpha-synuclein, in the spinal fluid of people at high risk of developing Parkinson's disease (PD). This breakthrough is significant because it can confirm the presence of abnormal alpha-synuclein with 93% accuracy and without the need for postmortem analysis. The validation was carried out in 1,123 samples of spinal fluid contributed by participants of The Michael J. Fox Foundation's Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). This new biomarker test enables earlier diagnosis and targeted treatments for Parkinson's, ultimately leading to a cure.

In preparation for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery PD Avengers cofounder Larry Gifford was tested after abstaining from carbidopa levodopa for 14 hours and then again forty minutes after taking two pills.  

As a vocal critic of levodopa, Larry now has a newfound respect for the 50+ year old drug. Watch this video and think about the people with Parkinson's who do not have access to carbidopa levodopa, because they haven't been diagnosed, cannot afford it, do not have health insurance coverage, or live in a country that makes it available. Hey there, it's Larry Gifford, cofounder of PD Avengers. Today I want to share a truly eye-opening experience I had recently. During evaluation for DBS surgery, I needed to completely go off my meds for at least 12 hours. I call it the "DBS Off Challenge." It was truly revelatory to see just how much levodopa, the medication commonly used for Parkinson's, impacts my daily life. So, I went 14 hours without any medication at all. This was the first time I had been off levodopa since before my diagnosis, and it was an absolute game-changer.  

In the video, I walk you through a side-by-side comparison of me performing simple tasks like walking down the hall and doing a balance exercise both off and on levodopa. The results were nothing short of amazing.
